{"id":9154,"date":"2012-04-18T13:49:24","date_gmt":"2012-04-18T13:49:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/?p=9154"},"modified":"2012-04-18T13:49:24","modified_gmt":"2012-04-18T13:49:24","slug":"elephants-terrorize-villagers-in-mozambique","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/2012\/04\/18\/elephants-terrorize-villagers-in-mozambique\/","title":{"rendered":"Elephants terrorize villagers in Mozambique"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/d7facb120d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/d7facb120d.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"d7facb120d\" width=\"444\" height=\"313\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9156\" \/><\/a>Rampaging elephants are terrorizing Mozambican villages near the Zimbabwe border, attacking people,&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Rampaging elephants are terrorizing Mozambican villages near the Zimbabwe border, attacking people, trampling crops and scaring children, state-run newspaper Noticias reported Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are using traditional ways to try to scare the animals, but all in vain, because whenever we do something, the monsters disappear for a few days, and when they come back there is no peace,&#8221; local farmer Joseph Maithe told the paper.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It even seems they come back to take revenge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Locals living near the remote village of Mucumbura complain they are living in a state of siege as elephants lay waste to their crops, the paper said.<\/p>\n<p>They say children in the area are terrified to walk to school for fear of crossing paths with their tormentors, who recently trampled on and injured a local teacher, it added.<\/p>\n<p>Possible solutions to the human-elephant conflict, authorities say, include creating an elephant reserve in the area, relocating farmers from the animals&#8217; migratory path and installing drinking water for people so they do not have to share watering holes with elephants.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The government cannot kill wild animals, it would create disequilibrium in the ecosystem,&#8221; provincial governor Alberto Vaquina told the paper.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the southern African country&#8217;s wildlife was killed off during a brutal 16-year civil war that ended two decades ago.
