{"id":8943,"date":"2012-04-14T12:17:47","date_gmt":"2012-04-14T12:17:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/?p=8943"},"modified":"2012-04-14T12:17:47","modified_gmt":"2012-04-14T12:17:47","slug":"s-africa-supports-for-un-observer-mission-to-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/2012\/04\/14\/s-africa-supports-for-un-observer-mission-to-syria\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa supports for UN Observer Mission to Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/syria.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/syria.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"syria\" width=\"129\" height=\"82\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7423\" \/><\/a>South Africa said it supported a Western-drafted UN Security Council resolution allowing a ceasefire observer mission in Syria as the body prepared to vote on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The country, which is a non-permanent member of the Security Council, called on \u201call sides to the conflict to fully implement their commitments\u201d made to the UN-Arab League Kofi Annan, deputy foreign minister Ebrahim Ebrahim said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Deputy Minister reiterated South Africa\u2019s support for the call made by (Annan) regarding the urgent deployment of a UN Observer Mission to verify and monitor the ceasefire,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>A ceasefire came into force at dawn on Thursday after a 13-month crackdown on dissent that has cost an estimated more than 10,000 lives.<\/p>\n<p>The United States called for a vote on the resolution to allow an advance mission of 30 military observers to go to Syria next week to monitor the ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>The 15-member council will hold the vote at 1500 GMT on Saturday, but support from Syria\u2019s main ally Russia is uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa abstained from voting in a failed resolution last October that would have threatened possible action against President Bashar al-Assad.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution had a \u201chidden agenda\u201d to bring down Assad\u2019s government, South Africa said at the time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa said it supported a Western-drafted UN Security Council resolution allowing a ceasefire observer mission in Syria as the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[81],"tags":[699,258,379,1622,470],"class_list":["post-8943","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-national-news","tag-africa","tag-malawi","tag-south-africa","tag-syria","tag-un"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8943","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=8943"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8943\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=8943"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=8943"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=8943"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
