Abstract<\/strong><\/div>\n
Species of\u00a0Stigmatochromis\u00a0<\/em>are haplochromine cichlids endemic to Lake Mala?i, and the genus currently includes four species,\u00a0S. woodi<\/em>\u00a0(type species),\u00a0S. modestus<\/em>,\u00a0S. pholidophorus<\/em>, and\u00a0S. pleurospilus<\/em>. The latter two are known from only their holotypes. Herein, we describe two additional species,\u00a0Stigmatochromis macrorhynchos<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0andStigmatochromis melanchros<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0from southern Lake Mala?i.<\/div>\n

Etymology:\u00a0<\/strong>Specific epithet a noun in apposition from\u00a0Greek\u00a0makros\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>meaning \u201clong<\/em>\u201d and\u00a0rhynchos\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>meaning \u201csnout<\/em>,\u201d referring to the\u00a0elongated snout\u00a0<\/em>of this species.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Etymology:\u00a0<\/strong>Specific epithet is a noun in apposition derived from the\u00a0Greek\u00a0melas<\/strong><\/em>, meaning \u201cblack<\/em>\u201d and from\u00a0khros\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>meaning \u201cskin<\/em>\u201d or \u201csurface of body<\/em>\u201d in reference to the overall black color of the breeding males.<\/div>\n
Remarks:\u00a0<\/strong>Stigmatochromis melanchros\u00a0<\/em>is a piscivore that breeds in rocky reefs where territorial males defend the vertical face of a large boulder near the sandy bottom. This differs from the sympatric\u00a0S. woodi<\/em>; males of which build large bowers on the open sand away from any rocks (Fig. 1B).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
