{"id":6026,"date":"2011-11-09T20:02:38","date_gmt":"2011-11-09T20:02:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/?p=6026"},"modified":"2011-11-09T20:02:38","modified_gmt":"2011-11-09T20:02:38","slug":"malawi-enters-global-scrutiny-on-corruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/2011\/11\/09\/malawi-enters-global-scrutiny-on-corruption\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi enters global scrutiny on corruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> by Collins Mtika<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/malawi_bingu020.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6036\" title=\"malawi_bingu020\" src=\"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/malawi_bingu020-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Impoverished Malawi will for the first time face globally scrutiny on how it is tackling its endemic corruption following its inclusion in the Global Corruption Barometer 2011, according to Transparency International (TI).<\/p>\n<p>Malawi joins nine other Africa countries such as Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Mozambique and Zimbabwe among others.<\/p>\n<p>TI\u2019s Senior Programme Coordinator for Africa and Middle East Annitte Jaitner said this during a media briefing to Journalists from Africa and Asia at Transparency International\u2019s secretariat in Berlin, Germany on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Jaitner said the report would be officially launched on November 22, 2011 in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>In a thinly veiled disclosure of the 2011 major findings, Jaitner said property rights, land deals, Police and the education sector feature very high.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLand deals are not properly transparent. People are displaced and are not properly compensated,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Global Corruption Barometer, which started publishing its results in 2003 initially with 44 countries and will have 96 in 2011, explores the general public\u2019s views about corruption levels in their country and their government\u2019s efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The Barometer complements, Transparency International\u2019s Corruption Perception Index (CPI), which Malawi has for long been featured and (CPI) gathers the general public\u2019s perceptions about how key institutions are affected by corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Samantha Grant, TI\u2019s Programme Coordinator for Asia and the Pacific justified her organization\u2019s increased funding despite the global crunch saying it reflects recognition in the world that corruption is a big problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith governments committing huge sums to tackle the world\u2019s most pressing problems, from the instability of financial markets to climate change and corruption \u2013 corruption remains an obstacle to achieving progress,\u2019 according to TI.<\/p>\n<p>In its latest Corruption Perception Index, Transparency International ranks Malawi at 85 out of 178 countries.<\/p>\n<p>But in Malawi many government and quasi-government institutions do not complying with Corrupt Practices Act.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Collins Mtika Impoverished Malawi will for the first time face globally scrutiny on how it is tackling its endemic [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":6036,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[81],"tags":[525,1027,515],"class_list":["post-6026","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-national-news","tag-bingu","tag-corruption","tag-government"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6026","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6026"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6026\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6026"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6026"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6026"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
