{"id":5995,"date":"2011-11-08T08:49:11","date_gmt":"2011-11-08T08:49:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/?p=5995"},"modified":"2011-11-08T08:49:11","modified_gmt":"2011-11-08T08:49:11","slug":"malawi-fuel-pump-prices-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/2011\/11\/08\/malawi-fuel-pump-prices-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi Fuel Pump Prices Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_5997\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/fuel_shortage_malawi_slide.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5997\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5997\" title=\"fuel_shortage_malawi_slide\" src=\"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/fuel_shortage_malawi_slide-300x146.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"146\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5997\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pic by Zodiak<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The pump stations in Malawi are, of course without fuel, however, that has not stopped the Malawi energy Regulatory Authority from pushing up fuel pump prices.<\/p>\n<p>Petrol price per litre has shot by 31 percent from K290.00 to K380.00 whereas diesel is now at K360.00 from K260.00 representing a 38 percent upward movement.<\/p>\n<p>Paraffin which was selling at 155 kwacha, is now at 171 kwacha.<\/p>\n<p>The hike is coming just hours after government issued a statement blaming profiteering in the fuel business on low official fuel prices which have resultantly encouraged \u201c illegal and shameful\u201d black market fuel transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Among others, MERA says the hike has been necessitated by the increasing prices of petroleum products on the international market and the recent devaluation of the kwacha in Malawi.<\/p>\n<p>MERA says the fuel price adjustments are effective 8th November, 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Malawi government has heaped blame for the scarcity of fuel in the country on black market dealers who are buying in jerry cans for resale at even higher prices.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Environment November 7 issued a statement arguing that Malawi had, in 15 days, imported over 16 million litres of should normally have normalized the fuel situation by now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026but despite these significant imports of fuel the situation has not improved; and queues of motorists continue unabated. This is due to huge fuel black market has emerged,\u201d reads the statement in part.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry argues that the said \u201cunscrupulous people\u201d cause confusion and disorder at pump stations when fuel is available as they demand priority service from attendants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe result is that the demand for fuel in the country has become artificially high compared with the demand in normal times.
