{"id":5408,"date":"2011-09-28T14:04:49","date_gmt":"2011-09-28T14:04:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/?p=5408"},"modified":"2011-09-28T14:04:49","modified_gmt":"2011-09-28T14:04:49","slug":"malawi-presses-un-to-renew-efforts-to-advance-process-of-decolonization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/2011\/09\/28\/malawi-presses-un-to-renew-efforts-to-advance-process-of-decolonization\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi presses UN to renew efforts to advance process of decolonization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/un.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/un.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"un\" width=\"272\" height=\"185\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5409\" \/><\/a>The United Nations must renew its commitment to ensure that the world\u2019s 16 remaining non-self-governing territories, home collectively to nearly two million people, are able to exercise their right to self-determination, Malawi said today.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the final day of the General Assembly\u2019s annual general debate, Malawian Foreign Minister Arthur Peter Mutharika said \u201cthe continuation of colonialism in any form is therefore counter-productive to social, economic and cultural development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Mr. Mutharika paid tribute to the UN\u2019s decolonization efforts, given that almost 750 million people lived in non-self-governing territories when the Organization was founded in 1945, he stressed that \u201cthere is still a long way to go. Our task is not finished.
