{"id":3481,"date":"2011-07-11T13:46:05","date_gmt":"2011-07-11T13:46:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/?p=3481"},"modified":"2011-07-11T13:46:05","modified_gmt":"2011-07-11T13:46:05","slug":"the-beit-trust-scholarship-for-malawians-in-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/2011\/07\/11\/the-beit-trust-scholarship-for-malawians-in-the-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"The Beit Trust Scholarship for Malawians In The UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3482\" title=\"the-beit-scholarship-trust-for-malawi-zambia-and-zimbabwe-students-to-study-abroad-n1749\" src=\"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/the-beit-scholarship-trust-for-malawi-zambia-and-zimbabwe-students-to-study-abroad-n1749.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"187\" \/>Welcome to the Beit Trust \u2013 now in its 105th year<\/p>\n<p>The Trust was initially set up in 1906 by the will of Alfred Beit, for the benefit of the people of North and South Rhodesia (now Zambia and Zimbabwe).\u00a0 In 1954 the Trust was reconstituted by an Act of Parliament in the United Kingdom as an incorporated charity and, with the advent of Federation, the country of Nyasaland (now Malawi) was included in the \u201cSpecified Area\u201d as a beneficiary.\u00a0 Under Section 3 of The Act, The Beit Trust is an incorporated body. The Trust does not fundraise and seeks to continue the philanthropic work desired by the donor through the careful stewardship and maintenance in perpetuity of its existing resources.<\/p>\n<p>Today the Trust is engaged in making grants within its \u201cBeneficial Area\u201d \u2013 namely Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe for Health, Education, Welfare and Environmental projects. For further details look on our Grants page.<\/p>\n<p>The Trustees have always given preference to funding buildings and infrastructure.\u00a0 Grants are occasionally given for very large new constructions, such as bridges, hospitals, or schools, but generally most projects are chosen with the purpose of enhancing existing establishments or programmes, such as independent, rural, or mission schools, hospitals, or wildlife schemes.\u00a0 It does not make grants for vehicles, and very seldom makes grants to other grant-making organisations<\/p>\n<p>While recognising the pressing need, the Trustees are aware of the help given to AIDS alleviation and orphanages by other major donors, and, therefore,\u00a0 set limits to the Trust\u2019s assistance with the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The Trust also provides a limited number of scholarships for postgraduate courses at universities in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland or South Africa.\u00a0 Candidates must be domiciled in Malawi, Zambia or Zimbabwe (the \u201cBeneficial Countries\u201d) and aged under 30 (or 35 in the case of medical doctors).\u00a0 Please note that the Beit Trust does not sponsor undergraduates; seldom sponsors PhDs, and rarely sponsors MBAs except in South Africa.\u00a0 No candidate will be considered unless his\/her future work is demonstrably beneficial to the people of his\/her parent country.
