{"id":3304,"date":"2011-07-06T14:28:16","date_gmt":"2011-07-06T14:28:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/?p=3304"},"modified":"2011-07-06T14:28:16","modified_gmt":"2011-07-06T14:28:16","slug":"malawis-external-debt-at-846m-malawi-democrat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/2011\/07\/06\/malawis-external-debt-at-846m-malawi-democrat\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi\u2019s external debt at $846m | Malawi Democrat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3305\" title=\"kandodoooo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/kandodoooo.jpg\" alt=\"KANDODO:Foreign debt up to wtf\" width=\"293\" height=\"165\" \/>Malawi\u2019s total public external debt was at$846.2 million (about K127 billion) at the end of 2010 from $762 million (about K114 billion),\u00a0<em>The Nation<\/em> newspaper said, citing a Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) economic \u00a0report.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The debt amounts to 16.5 percent of the nation\u2019s gross domestic product (GDP), according to the central bank, as reported by the daily paper.<\/p>\n<p>The RBM says the increase is mainly due to increased disbursements by Malawi\u2019s multilateral and bilateral creditors over the years.<\/p>\n<p>The bank says an adjustment was made last year to the debt stock to include debt owed to other bilateral creditors such as Mainland China, Belgium and France whose debt to the country was forgiven at the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (Hipc) Completion Point in 2006, but were still waiting the signing of bilateral agreements to effect the cancellation, reported The Nation.<\/p>\n<p>Bilateral debt accounted for 17.5 percent of the stock, up from 11.2 percent in the preceding year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe emergence of new bilateral creditors resulted in significant increase in bilateral debt to close the year at $148.5 million. Commercial debt accounted for 1.3 percent of the total debt stock at $10.8 million,\u201d said the report.<\/p>\n<p>Finance Minister Mr Ken Kandodo disclosed in the 2011\/12\u00a0 budget \u00a0that Malawi plans to repay K19.7 billion [about $129.6 million) in form of interest\u00a0 on all public debts.
