\"\"Malawi\u2019s legendary musician Lucius \u2018Soldier\u2019 Banda says new kids on the block are not a threat to him on the local music scene.<\/p>\n

He said this in an interview with\u00a0Nyasa Times<\/em> during the Malawian Music Awards (MMA) in Blantyre on Friday night.<\/p>\n

The old timer, who had three nominations in the MMA, only won one award \u2018Best Local\u2019, missing out on \u2018Best Male Vocal\u2019 which on paper he was a favourite but was won by Afro R&B singer Maskal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have passed that time when I\u2019d get threatened by young artists,\u201d said Soldier who will be releasing his 16th album \u2018Life\u2019 next month.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cActually am happy that these youngsters are doing great and I gave all of them a standing ovation for grabbing an award.\u201d<\/p>\n

Apart from the \u2018Udalire\u2019 and \u2018Wa CV\u2019 hits maker Maskal, who had a an overwhelming performance during the awards, other youthful artists that scooped the MMAs were Young Kay, Dan Lu, Theo Thomson, Sonye, Simon & Kendall and Dominant One.<\/p>\n

While saying \u201cit feels good\u201d to win an award in the first MMA, Lucius, who has been host to many popular musicians, helping to begin their careers said \u201cit would not have been fair for one person to walk out with five awards.\u201d<\/p>\n

Turning 41 this August, Lucius however urged the organizers of the MMA, incmedia, to introduce a \u201cFirst Best Comers\u201d category for \u201cbeginners\u201d in next year\u2019s awards.<\/p>\n

And in a separate interview, the man behind the MMA, Denis Mitole said \u201cexciting categories will be introduced next year, we have learnt a lot out of these awards and we\u2019re hoping for the best in 2012.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having released his debut album \u2018Nthawi\u2019 seven months ago, Maskal, who recently performed at Big Brother Africa Amplified in South Africa, beat old timers Lucius, Ben Mankhamba, Skeffa Chimoto, and Dan Lu to be crowned the best male artist.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very excited with this award. It\u2019s a motivation to come top of such great musicians and this gives me the hunger to give Malawians the best of Malawian music,\u201d said the singer.<\/p>\n

Maskal is expected to headline this year\u2019s Lake of Stars international music festival in Mangochi alongside Lucius, Black Missionaries, Skeffa as well as UK\u2019s Foals and South Africa\u2019s Freshlyground.\u2014(Reporting by Kimpho Loka, Nyasa Times)<\/em><\/p>\n
