{"id":11263,"date":"2012-06-04T16:43:14","date_gmt":"2012-06-04T16:43:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/?p=11263"},"modified":"2012-06-04T16:43:14","modified_gmt":"2012-06-04T16:43:14","slug":"abantu-salutes-jb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/2012\/06\/04\/abantu-salutes-jb\/","title":{"rendered":"ABANTU salutes JB"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> THE WOMEN\u2019S activist group, ABANTU for Development has acknowledged Her Excellency Mrs. Joyce Banda as the President of Malawi following the death of the late President, Bingu wa Mutharika on Thursday April 5, 2012.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/abantu.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/abantu.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"abantu\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11265\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nMrs. Banda, who served as Vice President under the late President was constitutionally mandated to assume power in the event of the death of the incumbent President, and was thus sworn into office on April 7, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>In a press release signed by the Director of ABANTU, Dr. Rose Mensah-Kutin, she expressed joy that the prominent women\u2019s rights campaigner, becomes the first female Head of State in Southern Africa and the second in the African Continent.<\/p>\n<p>She said Mrs. Banda spent most of her life championing the education of underprivileged girls and gained international recognition for her activism and commitment to women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cABANTU remembers her visit to Ghana in 2010 in connection with the 10th Anniversary Celebrations of the founding of the African Women\u2019s Development Fund (AWDF) as well as being a recipient of the AWDF\u2019s coveted \u2018Woman of Substance Award\u201d, she recollected.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, as a women\u2019s rights organisation, ABANTU considers the ascendency of her Excellency to the highest office of Presidency as significant in amplifying women\u2019s voices and visibility in public life.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, \u201cWe are hopeful that H.E.
