{"id":11122,"date":"2012-05-31T12:27:01","date_gmt":"2012-05-31T12:27:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/?p=11122"},"modified":"2012-05-31T12:27:01","modified_gmt":"2012-05-31T12:27:01","slug":"malawi-police-chief-assures-chanco-of-academic-freedom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.faceofmalawi.com\/index.php\/2012\/05\/31\/malawi-police-chief-assures-chanco-of-academic-freedom\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi Police Chief assures Chanco of academic freedom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> As one way of mending fences with various communities in the country, Inspector General (IG) of Malawi Police Service (MPS) Lot Dzonzi on Tuesday evening visited Chancellor College, a constituent college of the University of Malawi, where he assured lecturers and students of academic freedom.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Chanco-campus-Protest-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.faceofmalawi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Chanco-campus-Protest-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Chanco-campus-Protest-1\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8584\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe police chief is on a mission to win back public trust of the police, which was eroded in the era of the late president Bingu wa Mutharika.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the lecturers first, Dzonzi said the police will only succeed in its mandate by working in partnership with various communities such as the university fraternity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe impact of academic freedom affected everybody in society. Let me assure you that I will respect what the Constitution says about academic freedom. You should also know that a student is not a spy and I will never listen to anything that can destroy the relationship we are rebuilding today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dzonzi said the country needs to concentrate on issues that can bring positive impact to its citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Chancellor College Academic Staff Union (Ccasu) president Sunduzwayo Madise said the IG\u2019s visit signalled a new chapter in the relation between the police and the university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYourself [the IG] being a product of Chancellor College, we feel proud of your appointment and confirmation as the new police chief.
