Zimbabwe’s parliament has voted to abolish the death penalty, as the BBC’s Shingai Nyoka reports.
The draft act now requires the president’s approval to become law.
Zimbabwe’s constitution permits death sentence by hanging for cases including aggravated murder.
Although the last execution was carried out in 2005 courts have continued to impose the death penalty.
Human rights groups hailed the vote as a milestone in Zimbabwe’s journey towards human rights and dignity.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa is now expected to sign the bill into law.
