The police in Mponela, Dowa, are holding a man, Charles Alick John, in custody on suspicion of destroying a borehole worth 1 million Kwacha.
Mponela police spokesperson Sergeant Macpatson Msadala has stated that the man is believed to have committed the act on the night of December 24 in Mkanthama village.
According to Msadala, it is known that on that day, the man, who had been drinking Bibida (beer) at another location, arrived at the village where Adge Care had just repaired a borehole he intended to use for water.
Mr. Msadala added that while he was at the site, some people witnessed the man destroying the borehole without any apparent reason.
Afterward, the witnesses informed the police, who subsequently arrested the man.
Alick John hails from Chimalizeni village, in the area of Chief Chakhaza, in the district.
