Desire Nsapato, a 23-year-old man from Thyolo District, reportedly died by suicide in Balaka.
He had borrowed a friend’s phone on August 12, 2023, which contained K120,000.00 worth of Airtel Money.
Nsapato, who knew the PIN, withdrew the money and returned the phone to its owner. The friend discovered the missing money on August 13, realizing it had been transferred to another Airtel Money account.
Airtel Customer Care confirmed Nsapato’s involvement in the transfer.
Balaka Police spokesperson Gladson M’bumpha revealed that Nsapato admitted to the withdrawal and returned K21,000.00, with plans to repay the remaining amount.
Tragically, he was found dead shortly afterwards. Postmortem results attributed his death to suffocation.
Nsapato hailed from Chilembwe Village in the area of Traditional Authority Nchiramwera in Thyolo District.
