MCP Shocked With Alleged Abduction of CDEDI Leader Sylvester Namiwa

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has condemned the alleged abduction of Sylvester Namiwa, the Executive Director of a human rights grouping Center for Democracy and Economic Initiatives (CDEDI).

According to a statement signed by the party’s publicist Reverend Maurice Munthali the alleged Namiwa’s abduction is incomprehensible and unacceptable development in a new Malawi.

According to Munthali, MCP strongly condemn the alleged abducting of Namiwa in strong terms.

“As a law abiding party we believe in and uphold the rule of law and all the freedoms and rights as enshrined in our republican constitution. Malawi is a free society whose citizens must, at all times, enjoy and exercise their freedoms and rights including the right to free assembly,” said Munthali.

The statement further called on the Malawi Police to intensify their investigations into the matter and bring those involved in the alleged Namiwa’s abduction to book.

Just after 45 minutes Namiwa finished addressing the media on today’s demonstrations against president Lazarus Chakwera, news broke that unknown people abducted Namiwa at area 3 in the capital Lilongwe.

According to CDEDI officials the whereabouts of Namiwa remains unknown.

The Malawi police said they are investigating the matter.
