Elephant kills 3 in Zomba

An Elephant which escaped from Liwonde National Park caused havoc in Zomba on Wednesday and Thursday, killing three people in the process.

Police spokesperson for Eastern Region Thomeck Nyaude, confirming the development yesterday, identified the deceased as 34-year old Fredrick Galimoto from Jenala in Phalombe, 45 year old Felix Julius and Mikaele Nansalu, both from Nasawa in Zomba.

“When it was spotted in Zomba Malosa, Liwonde National Park sent their game rangers Galimoto and Aaron Kisingile to drive the elephant back to the park but it instead attacked Galimoto and trampled on him to death,” Nyaude said.

He further said the elephant was later spotted in Zomba Mpondabwino in the early hours of Thursday before it went to Nasawa in the same district where it killed Julius and Nansalu before it was killed by a team of police officers and game rangers from the park.

He added that before leaving Malosa, the elephant also injured a 59-year old Mrs Richard from Malemia in Zomba who is receiving medical treatment. – By Simeon Maganga
